State Senator Janet Buckner has announced her resignation from the state general assembly, effective January 9, 2025.

In the November 2024 general election, Senator Buckner ran unopposed and received over 45,000 votes to retain her esteemed Senate seat in District 29 (Aurora).

In her letter to the Senate Secretary, Buckner expressed, “I write this letter to formally submit my resignation as State Senator for Senate District 29, effective on January 9, 2025, at 5:30 PM.

It has been a profound honor to serve the people of Aurora in the Colorado General Assembly for the past nine years. I take pride in the collaborative efforts we’ve made to enhance the lives of all Coloradans and look forward to contributing to my community in new and meaningful ways.”

In July 2015, Buckner was unanimously appointed by a vacancy committee to complete the term of her late husband, John W. Buckner, as the representative for House District 40 in southern Aurora. She subsequently secured re-election in both 2016 and 2018. Following her 2018 victory, she was appointed Speaker Pro Tempore, a respected leadership position in the Colorado House.

In 2020, Senator Buckner transitioned to the Senate, winning the election to represent Senate District 29 in southern Aurora. She has since been appointed Majority Caucus Chair and serves as the Chair of the Education Committee.

A committed advocate for addressing health and education disparities, Senator Buckner has established herself as a leader in the legislature, successfully passing bipartisan legislation to address these critical concerns. She is deeply dedicated to ensuring every individual has a voice in policy and legislative matters, consistently guiding her efforts with grace, inclusivity, and empathy.

Having served in the Colorado Senate since January 2021, she was elected in 2020 to represent Senate District 29, which encompasses parts of southern Aurora.

In a statement regarding Senator Buckner’s resignation, Governor Polis remarked, “Janet Buckner is a valued friend and champion for the people of our state and the community of Aurora. Her unwavering dedication to issues such as free preschool, education, and affordable healthcare reflects a commitment to prioritizing the needs of Colorado residents. It has been a pleasure working alongside Senator Buckner, and her presence will undoubtedly be missed by colleagues across the legislature. Following the passing of her husband John in 2015, Janet stepped forward with resolve to carry on his legacy of service. Both Janet and John have been pillars of the community and will leave an enduring impact. I am confident that whatever path Janet chooses next, she will
