James Coleman Named Colorado Senate President, Promises to Defend Colorado Values
Summary
Colorado State Senator James Coleman has been named the new President of the Colorado Senate, garnering widespread support from both sides of the political aisle. His recent re-election marks another milestone for Colorado politics, reflecting the Senate’s commitment to progressive leadership and bipartisan cooperation. Coleman will serve as the second Black Senate president from the 33rd district.
Senator Coleman, a Democrat known for his collaborative spirit and dedication to Colorado’s diverse communities, has consistently championed economic development, education, and healthcare policies. His ability to work with lawmakers across the political spectrum has earned him respect in the Senate, a quality many see as crucial in today’s divided political landscape.
“I am humbled to receive the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate Democrats,” said Senate President James Coleman, D-Denver. “As we approach the upcoming legislative session and all of the challenges ahead, we must come together to defend our Colorado values and ensure our state is one that guarantees stability, security, and opportunity for all its residents. Senate Democrats have delivered results to lower costs for housing and health care, increase funding for schools and teachers, and defend fundamental freedoms, like voting rights and reproductive care. I’m excited to see how this caucus will build on that progress and continue to build a Colorado where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
The new Senate president’s colleagues in leadership positions are Robert Rodriguez, Majority Leader; Dafna Michaelson Jenet, president pro tempore; Lisa Cutter, Assistant Majority Leader; Nick Hinrichsen, Majority Whip; Dylan Roberts, Caucus Chair; and Jeff Bridges and Judy Amabile, members of the Joint Budget Committee.
In January 2008, the honorable Peter C. Groff was the first Black to serve as Colorado Senate President.
As Coleman steps into his new role on January 8, 2025, Colorado residents hope his approach will lead to meaningful, long-lasting improvements across the state.
