Have you ever wondered how far a $1,500 monthly rent budget can stretch in Denver? Not very far, according to our latest report. Renters in the Mile High City have the least room to stretch out compared to others in the Mountain region. It’s even below the national average of 729 square feet. As apartment hunters embark on their quest for the perfect place this peak rental season, we’ve compiled a list to help them find the cities where their dollar goes the distance.

Let’s crunch the numbers:

In Denver, $1,500 monthly gets you a modest 629 square feet. With some clever design, it might just be enough for a snug one-bedroom unit – that’s precisely 100 square feet less than what the average U.S. renter gets. This landed Denver the last place among other big cities in the Mountain region (population of more than 225,000), just behind Scottsdale, AZ.

And what about the other cities in the metro? All offer less than 800 square feet. Thornton leads the pack with 716 square feet for this budget, followed closely by Aurora with 714 square feet. In Lakewood, $1,500 will get you 689 square feet, slightly more than in Denver.

In Colorado Springs, the same budget will get you a generous 838 square feet, enough for a spacious one-bedroom apartment or even a two-bedroom, depending on your creativity.

Nationwide, in 62% of the 200 largest U.S. cities analyzed in the report, you’ll find more space than the national average. For the roomiest rentals, head to the South and Midwest. Leading the pack is Wichita, with a whopping 1,359 square feet. On the flip side, Manhattan offers the least apartment space in the nation, not enough for a studio, at just 228 square feet.
