Denver Nuggets’ Media Credential Controversy
Denver Nuggets’ Media Credential Controversy
Summary
In a predominantly Black league, the Denver Nuggets’ public relations department has made it clear that they do not value the presence of a leading Black-owned media outlet representing the Black community at their games. After more than two decades of covering the Nuggets since 1996, The Sports Report will no longer continue our team coverage.
This decision follows the Nuggets’ dissatisfaction with our thorough live coverage of the Abu Dhabi Games, which included six posts—three articles, three photo galleries, a live pregame report on location aired on 104.3 FM The Fan, and an interview on ESPN Netherlands. Notably, the Sports Report was the only Denver media outlet present for the Game Two post-game press conference with the coaches and players.
Nick O’Hayre of the Nuggets conveyed in a statement, “With the increased number of qualified outlets requesting credentials and a limited number of media seats available, we are unable to grant credentials to your outlet.”
This dismissive attitude is unacceptable and undermines the role of Black media in providing coverage and perspective for the community.
Editor’s Note:
Denver Weekly News supports The Sports Report’s decision to withdraw its coverage, highlighting essential concerns regarding inclusion in media representation.
Through our partnership with The Sports Report, we have been proud to provide coverage of the Nuggets, steadfastly maintaining our commitment even during seasons when the team faced challenges.
The Nuggets organization must review its media credentialing policies to foster a genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion. Such a review could help ensure that all voices are represented and valued in the media.
