On the evening of January 14, 2025, the Colorado Symphony hosted its annual public benefit concert, featuring a unique blend of symphony music, gospel, and soul genres. This event marks the start of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission’s celebrations - The Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Humanitarian Awards occurs at Boettcher Concert Hall.
During the 39th annual ceremony, three non-profit organizations and eight individuals were honored for their service and humanitarian contributions at the MLK Award event. The awardees:
Individuals:
Nevadah Brown, Honor student at Montbello High School
Bianca Emerson, president of the Colorado Black Women for Political Action
Dr. Anne Garrett-Mills, psychiatrist at Aurora Mental Health & Recovery
Silke Hansen - known as “America’s Peacemaker,” for her mediation efforts in school desegregation and labor efforts.
Graham Hill a collaborator in establishing the MLK Highway in Boulder and a local and international leader in the electric vehicle industry.
Bobby King - King was honored for his exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the healthcare sector.
Jacki Marsh - Meaningful changemaker and the mayor of Loveland, CO
Deborah Richardson - the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado
Organizations:
The Black Resilience in Colorado Fund (BRIC) Its mission includes advancing economic equity, racial justice, and empowerment through philanthropy and community-led solutions.
Reading Partners - Its mission is to help children become lifelong readers in Colorado.
Urban Leadership Foundation of Colorado - Its mission includes leadership development in business, politics, and community service.
Under the skilled direction of conductor Wilbur Lin, the symphony concert showcased an array of talented guest artists. The evening was highlighted by the soulful vocals of Olivia Whittington, who captivated the audience with her powerful performances of ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ and ‘Let’s Stay Together .’Adding to the experience, the Hope City Church of Colorado Worship Team brought a vibrant energy to the stage with their rendition of ‘ The Best is Yet to Come’ and ‘Total Praise .’ Meanwhile, while performing’ One Nation Under a Grove,’ Tarell Martin and the C2 Mass Choir filled the venue with rich harmonies and uplifting spirits. The talented pianist Michael Chipman’s expressive playing added depth and emotion to the concert. These artists created an unforgettable musical experience that resonated with all who attended.
