Broncos Growth Spans the Spectrum
Broncos Growth Spans the Spectrum
Summary
In the course of a three-game stretch, in the heart of the schedule, against first-place teams, the Denver Broncos have run the gambit. Displaying exponential growth, the Denver Broncos went from a blowout loss on the road to a blowout win at home, with a convincing razor-thin match against the undefeated champions separating the games. With the team going from one extreme to the other, in the process, rookie quarterback Bo Nix has developed into a legit franchise-type leader, progressing each week.
In the 38-6 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Nix posted consecutive weeks of improvement, surpassing his career-best in each game. In Sunday’s win, Nix had his first 300+ yard game with 307 yards and four touchdowns passing for a season-best. His 145.0 passer rating with no interceptions and no turnovers was also a season-best. Nix’s performance against the Falcons earned him the AFC Offensive Player of the Week Award, making him the first Broncos rookie to win that achievement in franchise history.
One week after essentially being benched, Broncos’ running back Javonte Williams returned to the starting position and turned in a solid performance. A rushing touchdown by Williams was reminiscent of a rugby scrum, with several Broncos’ players pushing Williams from behind to get him past the goal line.
“I think that play is kind of the epitome of this week,” Nix said after the game. “I think we have been wanting to get over a hurdle. He stopped there for a minute, and everybody just kind of pushes around him and gets him in the end zone. Those are the plays you love to see from an offense and a team. It almost looks like one united team that is going for one goal. Nobody who was pushing or blocking cared who got the touchdown. And Javonte was glad they were pushing him from behind. I think it was just a great team effort, and that [is a picture of] what this week has been for us, just finding ways to [get] effort and intensity and maximize the opportunity that we have.”
Complimenting rising star Bo Nix is the equally impressive Broncos’ defense. Keeping the Falcons out of the end zone the entire game, the Broncos have only allowed one touchdown in the last eight quarters of play. With 39.0 sacks in 11 games, the Broncos are ranked number one in the NFL. They are in the top five in each leading statistical category on defense.
“That’s just what goes to [show] what type of defense we have,” cornerback Pat Surtain II said. “And it’s crazy to say that we could even be better. But, you know, at the end of the day, having a game like that, that’s good on your resume. But you have to keep on stacking. Keep on building victories.”
The schedule for the Broncos gets significantly more accessible over the next few weeks based on the record of their opponents. They will face the last-place Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday on the road, followed by the last-place Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football on December 2nd. Then comes the most accessible weekend, with the BYE Sunday on December 8th. Game time on Sunday in Las Vegas is 2:05 PM MT.
